Cypress Slabs

Part of the local New Orleans look is the use of cypress as a commonly used wood. We don't insist on it, but we specialize in cypress.

It's easy to source locally, grown and harvested sustainably. The most common type is Southern Red, very versatile and can be used for anything. It's resistant to insects and wards off natural decay thanks to its natural oil cypressene which functions as a preservative agent. Even if we're talking decks, siding or outdoor furniture it keeps its good looks. That's why we love using cypress for trims, flooring, cabinets. You can easily treat or paint it, after all. Personally we enjoy building furniture right out of cypress and keep its grain intact and let it shine.

What are the advantages of cypress wood?

  • Resistant to natural decay

  • Resistance to insects

  • Easy Use

  • Your choice

  • Locally Sourced & Sustainably Harvested

Resistant to natural decay

Cypress has a low of natural oils, meaning that rot doesn't set in easily, fungi can't really hurt it and your wood is safe.

Resistance to insects

Termites love wood, except for cypress. Again it's the natural oils that repel bugs completely organically.

Easy Use

It's a pleasure to use cypress and it can be worked with either by hand or with power tools. It resists warping and is a joy to plane.

Locally Sourced & Sustainably Harvested

Cypress is harvested locally, because it's very common in the New Orleans area. Due the common presence it can be sustainably harvested and there's a lot of great options to get cypress without having to worry about its origins.

Your choice

Cypress grows slow and tight, it's a very dense wood due to the environment it grows up in. It can be painted or stained or even left how it is and always come out beautiful. Give it the right sheen or let it turn a light silver gray in the weather. Up to you, but there's no wrong choice here.
